Put history into perspective for me

At last an accessible history of the world. Once I started to read this book I could not put it down. There are some less complimentary reviews but I feel they are a little harsh. Andrew Marr was able to put into context a whole raft of cultures and how they did or did not interact. I cannot count the number of times I thought to myself "ah, that is why this happened". It was as if lots of little lights came on and joined up a map of history.
The clarity of writing and the little side comments made this a very enjoyable and informative read. If history had been taught in a similar way when I was at school, I would have been a very different student.

I really enjoyed reading this book

This is my first non-academic world history read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Marr weaves together different countries, cultures and their leaders smoothly page after page, often with a unifying theme in mind. Sometimes one can catch a bit of fluffy rhetoric but this does not detract from the experience even if the reader is only trying to gain new knowledge. The book is easy to read yet filled with detail. Marr definitely leans towards writing about new cultures and peoples or towards existing history with new historical information. I felt the book to be a bit short even though it's over 500 pages; there was certainly a huge skipping of historical events but Marr himself addresses this in the beginning of the book as inevitable of anyone trying to tackle a subject so daunting as world history. But Marr (or his editor) got it right when he named the book simply "A" history of the world (not "The") because it is merely one of many world history books that should be read for anyone serious enough about understanding the subject.

World history book that actually covers the world, unlike other "world" history books that focus primarily on Europe and the US

I was trying to find a medium-length world history book that really covered the world's history. This isn't easy, as most tend to focus primarily on European history. This book had relatively few reviews on Amazon, so I decided to keep looking rather than buy this when I first saw it. I ended up looking on the UK Amazon website, thinking that I may find a book there that wasn't available in the US. On the UK website, this book had many reviews, and they were very high. Based on this, I downloaded to my Kindle from the US website. The book is engaging. It doesn't cover any period as much as I'd like it to, but this is expected of a medium-length book that covers 10,000 years of history. It does however provide enough history for each period to help the reader determine what s/he would like to read about in greater detail, and then buy the relevant book for that period.

No wading through endless text waiting for the proverbial punch line, each chapter is a tangible shift for an organization. If a particular chapter doesn't happen to apply to your business or employer, just go to the next one - it probably will. It's a huge pet peave when authors blather on endlessly to impress you with their amazing thinking or accomplishments, forcing you to mine for the actual gold in the book (if it's even there). This book does none of that, and I am thankful to the author for not wasting my limited time. Excellent return on invested time and money. Bravo!

A favorite of mine

Having read that this work was recommended by Ramana Maharshi, and is a short, easy read, I picked up a hard copy of it. It really is a superb book. I know that's said alot about Maharshi's works, but this really is. It is in question/answer format between a Guru and a disciple, both unnamed. It is quite condensed, and what I thought to be an easy read turned out to be a lot more than I expected. I've had to reread it a couple times to fully understand. But I have learned a great deal from this work, about inquiry, hearing, reflection, etc., and whole-heartedly recommend it.

Excellent book, terrible binding

The book itself deserves a 5-star rating. Not only is this the most useful Old Norse dictionary out there (far better than Zoega), but the etymological and historical notes included for the common words makes this a dictionary that is enjoyable to simply read on its own.

Unfortunately, the quality of the binding of this book deserves only a 1-star rating. The Clarendon press used to produce beautiful, high-quality books that would last more than a scholar's lifetime. This book is perfect-bound (!!) which is absolutely horrible for such a large (and expensive) tome that is designed for the sort of long-term constant reference that scholars need. Within a month of receiving this book, the spine completely cracked. Within another 6 months the cover was falling off. This is absolutely unacceptable. If you go to a good university library and find the original printing of this book, you'll find a beautiful, high-quality printing with the pages grouped into signatures (as you would expect for an 800 page book!) and a nice cloth cover.

Unfortunately, this is the only way to get a hold of this book as it almost never shows up on the used market and the other versions out there based on photographs of the out-of-copyright first edition so bad they are mostly unusable.

If you purchase this book, take it to a bind binder and at least get the cover cut off and properly re-bound and then pray that the perfect-binding holds up better than mine...

I'm very pleased with this 1962 reprint of the 1957 edition of the dictionary. It's a nice solid publication, on good quality paper, clear printing, legible, easy to read type, strong binding.

Good for a quick and simple introduction to Moroccan history

Usually when I travel to a country where I've never been, I purchase a book about its history so that I don't arrive as a blank page. I believe it's important to know where a people come from, where they are and where they're going. It shows respect to a people if you have taken the time to learn about their past.

This book does that, but leaves you longing for more. I believe that WWII onwards was covered in about 20 pages. Mention of massacres were truly glossed over in mere paragraphs and required an Internet search to learn more. The author does provide an "Additional Reading" section, which I appreciated, but at times I just wanted to see more.

Very little was spent on Moroccan's current king and I believe that a country with a monarch should have at least a chapter on him.

Regardless, if you're looking for a very brief history of a country without too many details, this is your book. It is written in a very fluid and easy to read manner. If you're looking for something in depth, keep looking.

Very Fine Survey Thru End of the 20th Century

Though "re-issued" in 2009, this book was first published in 2003. We should all hope that the writer will publish an updated edition to give us his analysis of the first 15 years of Muhammad VI's reign. What he has written is an excellent survey of Moroccan history for the intelligent layperson. He covers a mass of complicated conflicts without becoming overly academic. The style is very readable. One can easily get lost among the numerous contenders for power in Morocco over the last many centuries but Pennell doesn't get bogged down in the details. At the end he has a useful chapter with helpful comments and suggestions for further reading. This is an excellent introduction to the subject. Unless you are interested in doing serious academic research this book will probably tell you all you need to know about Moroccan history up to the beginning of the current century.
