I thought this was a well written book by a person who was well acquainted with his subject. The book starts right after the Napoleonic Wars and illustrates the thinking of some far thinking Prussian generals. They realized that
German manpower did not create lsuperior soldiers. Other countries had men just as able. They also wanted to make the German Army superior by creating better leadership and better coordination from the top. To achieve this a General Staff was created. The old ways of raising, training and leading an army were discarded. The creators of the General Staff wanted to create an entity that would insure superior leadership not just in their time but and enduring power that would institutionalize military brilliance. They succeeded. The General
Staff always included men of real talent and in many cases there were men of extraordinary brilliance. It is true that Germany lost wars but it was never because they were out generaled. I agree with the author that the German General Staff was the best the world has ever known but I am not sure that he proved the German soldier was so superior to all other soldiers. They may have been but the body of statistics that the author used to prove his point, I consider somewhat suspect. On the other hand, he knows more about it than I but still that niggling doubt about the validity of his statistics lingers in my mind. The General Staff functioned pretty much as it was designed to do from its inception until Hitler came to power. Hitler was very lucky in the first years of his power but when he invaded Russia and took leadership away from the General Staff, all was lost. Hitler had no military knowledge of military matters excepting his service as a corporal in WW I. Had he left his major military campaigns in the hands of his generals the war may have had a different outcome. This is an interesting and thought provoking book.

Prussia and The German Army

A very analytical and descriptive work about a country bounded in the west by a covetous and hostile country (France) and an expansionist country in the east (Russia). It is understandable why Prussia, a country located in the flat northern terrain of Europe subject to numerous invasions from all directions, would ultimately develope into a strong military power. The general staff was simply their answer to the need for organized and speedy responses to a threat. We can learn many lessons from their history.

Well written without a school textbook feel

Anybody who has interest in 20th century military history,in particular that of Germany,will enjoy this book. It is a well written work without that school textbook feel which is all well and good for reading before bed. The German military and its process of striving for perfection in all areas so as to always be ahead of the enemy is keenly examined here. This is not a book that examines historical battles so much as the military minds that thought of them and then directed them.

interesting start

This one was good.. short but good.. only issue I do have is that she is very stuck on him being her brother, so it makes the book feel a bit.... weird for me. I understand he is in love with her and I do believe she is in love with him.. but she needs to get past the "brother" thing if she wants it to work. Overall I enjoyed it and will read the others to find out what happens

Nice start to the series

I was surprised by this. The quick get together worked here and I think it's because of the shifter element. There was enough history for me between the characters to set it up and there was some nice chemistry.

I can't wait to read the next two to find out what happens between Ben and Holly.

This was a pretty good story. Moves along very quickly, but it tells a lot of back story which I liked. The only thing keeping me from giving It five stars was how Ben kept taking advantage of Holly. She was not a very strong character. There is really not a story line, just a reunion. Happy reading.

A bargain way to see one of the great writers on nature for children

This book will be unusual for many readers because it is written for children with the voice of an adult who is saying what she thinks they will be interested in, but is talking to them with the sensibility of an adult and not a child. This is how many/most children's books were written in her time, but it has been unusual since at least 1962, when I submitted a draft for a children's book to a publisher and got the response that they loved the story but it would have to be re-written with children as the protagonists, that my perspective was just not right. Since the story was essentially non-fiction, about a baby hamster that my college roommate found on the floor in a lab and brought back to the dorm to become a clandestine pet, I had no story to tell in that way and gave up on the book. Anyway, I think children used to be accustomed to learning in the way of this book, which is more about loving instruction preceding observation and then respectful interaction, and now we are all about getting the kinds hands-on first and learn all the weird and flashy things.

Mrs Comstock's works are used by home schoolers, and it is a shame that there are apparently no well-done editions of her Handbook of Nature Study. (By well-done, I mean ones that are well-reproduced so that her drawings are crisp and attractive.) In contrast, this book is well-reproduced. I hope someone will make a decent copy from an original of Handbook of Nature Study (which is in the public domain) and publish it.

I ended up not giving this book at Christmas to the child for whom I had bought it. I gave her some flashier books instead. That was my sense of this child. Now that I have read it, I have another child in mind who will probably get this book next Christmas.

Only Through Christ Will We Overcome!

Moody has written a gem that will continue to bless long after his death over 100 years ago. The gist of the book is an inspiration to overcome internal and external obstacles through Christ's strength to be an overcomer.

Among the important points covered in the book include:

1. It is folly for a person to fight in the flesh. God will not abandon us in time of need. A godly person must learn to stand alone.

2. People wrapped up in pleasure have no time for meditation.

3. God wants us to use the influence we have for His glory. A person's influence lives on after the person dies.

4. Rare is the person who follows Christ in meekness and humility. You cannot counterfeit humility. We will not be disappointed when we humble ourselves before the Lord.

5. One of Christ's prominent virtures is His humility.

6. Rest cannot be found in the world - we will get rest only at the foot of the cross.

7. We have the privilege of casting our burdens on Jesus.

8. The way of obedience is always the way of blessing.

While this gem is little known compared to other Christian titles, it will nonetheless bless and encourage you.

GET THIS WHILE YOU CAN

I have been a great fan of D.L. Moody. Any new Christian will benefit from reading this book. From the first chapter to the last he goes through the Bible and just brings out simple truths that will help any Christian live a victorious life. I love how he takes you right into the Bible times through his illustrative Bible stories. This book is a great blessing and I wish I could have enough to give out as gifts.
