About the Author
Andrew Rozanov is Managing Director and Head of Institutional Portfolio Advisory at Permal Group, responsible for advising sovereign wealth funds and other long-term institutional investors on various aspects of asset allocation, portfolio construction, risk management and alternative investments, with a particular focus on global macro and tail risk strategies. Before joining Permal, Mr. Rozanov was at State Street, where he was Managing Director and Head of Sovereign Advisory, working closely with the Portfolio and Risk Management Group. Prior to that, he held various roles at State Street Corporation in London and Tokyo, and he also worked at UBS Investment Bank in Japan. Mr. Rozanov is well known in the industry for having introduced the term sovereign wealth funds in an article in Central Banking Journal in 2005. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), a Financial Risk Manager (FRM), and a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA). He holds a Master s equivalent degree in Asian and African Studies from Moscow State University.

This book is about understanding Global Macro hedge funds, not a guide to Global Macro investing.

This is a really hard book to review. I gave it 5 stars, but you *must* understand what it aims to teach, and what it does not aim to teach, before you buy it. At first, I was disappointed, because I bought the book expecting one thing but got something else. But it gets 5 stars in doing what it set out to do, and my misconception of what I was buying is not the book's fault. The fact that there were no other Amazon reviews to read was the real problem. Yet, in the end, I'm glad I paid the money and bought the book. It taught me things I did not even know I needed to know. I can now think like a global macro hedge fund manager -- but not necessarily invest like one.

I would rename this book, "Understanding the Structure and Philosophy of Global Macro Hedge Funds from the Inside Out". If you want to interview and work for a Global Macro hedge fund, it's a no-brainer: Buy this book. You must know this stuff. I learned a ton, and I'm glad I bought it. For instance, I now understand exactly how systematic macro fits into the big picture from the eyes of a fund-of-funds manager (and the people who determine allocation sizing). I can actually use this to design my own systems in ways that will be more useful to, more marketable to, and more effective in a fund environment. Flat out, I could make more money in this environment by knowing this material, and this is the only book I know of that goes into this in such detail. It's really one-of-a-kind, and it deserves every star I gave it.

On the other hand, I learned very little about actual global macro investing strategies from the book. Only two chapters out of fourteen even really go into any detail about specific investments and the logic behind them, and those examples are not particularly advanced. I bought the book expecting a discussion of the practical application of macroeconomic principles ("Theory") to specific investments ("Practice"); how the raw data was analyzed, how macroeconomic models were applied, how entries and exits were determined (over tens of examples and a consistent framework). After all, that's what the name "Global Macro: Theory and Practice" suggests to me. I got none of that, so if that's what you want, don't buy this book.

In the end, I might even say I learned nothing about actual global macro investing from a $200+ Global Macro book. But would I trade back the knowledge I gained about Macro Funds back for a mere $200? Not a chance. Because I do already have an investment methodology, and I have investment experience in global macro (and I bought the book hoping to gain further insights). But I've always focused on my own investments, from the perspective of an individual proprietary investor. This book expands the scope, showing in exact detail how to apply it effectively in the context of 100 other investment systems within the environment of a global macro hedge fund and then understand and evaluate your own performance through the eyes of the managers of that multi-billion-dollar fund. Where else will you find that? Nowhere, as far as I know.

The book gets 5 stars, but know what you're buying.

About the Author

William A. Corsaro was the Robert H. Shaffer Class of 1967 Endowed Chair of Sociology and is currently professor emeritus in the Department of Sociology at Indiana University, Bloomington, where he won the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1988. He teaches courses on the Sociology of Childhood, Childhood in Contemporary Society, and Ethnographic Research Methods. His primary research interests are the Sociology of Childhood, Children’s Peer Cultures, the Sociology of Education, and Ethnographic Research Methods. Corsaro is the author of Friendship and Peer Culture in the Early Years (1985), “We’re Friends, Right”: Inside Kids’ Culture (2003), and I Compagni: Understanding Children's Transition from Preschool to Elementary School (2005, with Luisa Molinari). He was a Fulbright Senior Research Fellow in Bologna, Italy, from 1983-1984 and a Fulbright Senior Specialist Fellow in Trondheim, Norway in 2003. Corsaro was inaugural recipient of the Distinguished Career Award from the American Sociological Association Section on Children and Youth in 2013.

Required for Class, but would recommend to anybody interested in the topic

Not quite a "read on the beach book", but a very easy read for a class-required text. William Corsaro is the leading authority on the sociology of childhood, making this book the foundational text in the field. I'd love a more timeless cover... but the content more than makes up for it. Recommend.

upgrading my evaluation from 3-star to 4-star

Update (after using for a couple of days): I was a bit harsh in expressing my initial opinion. After test-driving this new Oxford Arabic Dictionary for a couple of days while reading the latest Alaa Al Aswani novel, I've come to appreciate the larger print and the practical way in which it (the new OAD) is organized by roots (similar but slightly different from Hans Wehr). I will definitely be using this dictionary on a daily basis, all the while referring as needed to Wehr, and of course to Al Maurid and few other things I consider essential for MSA grammar reference, and help with spoken Arabic

This dictionary, while not devoid of merits, is not a replacement for Hans Wehr. The Hans Wehr dictionary (ed. by J.M
Cown) is a work of genius. This dictionary is the work of a committee. Hans Wehr is not obsolete, not out of date.

MSA-specific dictionary, less suited for classic language.

The book is not very large, although smaller than Oxford Dictionary of English, but still is not very suitable to carry very often.

The book, as the description says, covers Modern Standard Arabic(MSA), and does it pretty well.
But if you want to translate from classic language, the Holy Qur'an, then it is probably better to use dictionaries with
primary focus on classic language. I compare it with Arabic-Russian Baranov's dictionary and find
that it has a lot more classic language words in it than Oxford Arabic Dictionary also it(Baranov's dictionary) has deeper translations, more idioms are covered. In my opinion,
It is more useful for MSA, less for classic language.

I like it, can mention that it is more succinct that Wehr's dictionary - less synonyms, has words related to new technologies.

This book is intended for an international audience of practicing and future managers. It is written in English, the international language of business. The subject is marketing channels, the companies that come together to bring products and services from their point of origin to the point of consumption. Marketing channels are the downstream part of a value chain. The originator of goods or services gains access to a market through marketing channels. Channels of distribution are a critical element of business strategy.

The ideas in this book apply to any channel for any product or service in any market. The generality of the book is shown in its many examples taken from all over the world. These cover a wealth of different products and services, sold to businesses and consumers, selected from the worldwide business press, research, and consulting. Some examples are autopsies; dog and cat food; personal computers; pleasure boats; dolls; stereo speakers; fast food; tires; garden products; fast-moving consumer goods; maternity clothing; uninterruptible power supplies; maintenance, repair, and operating (MRO) goods; furniture; automobiles; airline travel services; and mutual funds. The variety of the list reinforces the generality of the principles. As is appropriate for an international readership, the presentation of each example is as though the reader is unfamiliar with the product or market in question. This book covers the highlights needed to frame the problem, then covers the channel issues in the examples. Channel Sketches provide detailed examples to improve the readability of the main text.

Each chapter is designed to stand on its own. The chapters may be read in any order, and any chapter may be omitted. Each chapter is of a length that can be assigned for a single class or read in one sitting with a single issue in mind. The chapters are designed modularly. Essential definitions are repeated where necessary so that the reader is free to choose one chapter and defer or omit another. Reference is made to other chapters when appropriate for the reader to go further into any topic raised in the chapter at hand. In this way, the reader can select how deeply to delve into all the sections of the book that most closely fit the problem under consideration.

The content of each chapter comes from the best of current research and practice. This book covers a vast and varied literature, bringing in findings, practice, and viewpoints from multiple disciplines (marketing, strategy, economics, sociology, law, political science) and from the best practices of channel managers worldwide. In presenting these works, the focus is on framing the problem and its solution in the language of business rather than on the technical aspects of the research. Yet the book introduces technical vocabulary in the appropriate instances for the manager. The theory, data, and methods that underlie the content of this book are not detailed. Instead, the relevant references are liberally noted and tied to the content, so that the interested reader may delve further into specific points.

The text is organized into four parts. Part One, "Introduction and Analytic Framework for the Book," introduces the basic ideas and concepts underlying channel analysis. It explains why specialized institutions and agencies have emerged to assist in the task of making goods and services available for industrial, institutional, and household consumption. Among the more critical concepts introduced in Chapter 1 are the notions of "service outputs" and marketing "flows" on which the remainder of the book relies heavily. Chapter 2 provides a coherent framework for building, maintaining, and analyzing channel structure and function. It includes demand-side analysis, supplyside analysis of both channel flows and channel structures, the analysis of gaps on the demand and supply sides, and responses by channel managers concerning the creation or modification of channel structures to meet target segments' needs. It also emphasizes the importance of ongoing management and coordination of the channel through the use of channel power sources and the recognition and management of channel conflict. This framework unifies the discussion throughout the rest of the book and forms the basis for the book's approach to channel design and management.

Part Two, "Channel Design: Demand, Supply, and Channel Structure," develops the framework for channel creation or modification. Chapter 3 focuses on the demand side by discussing how to segment a market for the purposes of channel design appropriately, using the core concept of service output demands. Chapter 4 turns to the supply side of the channel, introducing the concept of channel flows to describe the work done by channel members. This chapter emphasizes the importance of distributing flow responsibilities to channel members who can perform them most efficiently. Not only is the allocation of flows important, so is the issue of channel structure. This is the topic of Chapter 5, which discusses the types of firms that can and should be included in the channel, how broadly distributed the channel's products should be, and who specifically should be a member of the channel. Chapter 6 brings together the demand and supply sides through a discussion of gap analysis, whereby gaps can exist on the demand side, the supply side, or both. Sources of gaps, types of gaps, and methods of closing channel gaps are all discussed. Chapter 7 discusses a key issue in channel structure: whether to vertically integrate the channel. This chapter covers the make-or-buy issue in channels, as well as the decision whether to adopt an intermediate solution. These options blend the features of make and of buy. The next part of the book covers how to create such a midrange solution.

Part Three "Channel Coordination and Implementation," discusses how to get all the members of a channel to work in concert with one another. Concerted or coordinated action does not happen naturally in a marketing channel. This part covers how to overcome this problem by crafting channels that function smoothly in pursuit of common goals. Power is the subject of Chapter 8, which examines how to obtain the potential for influence—and how to use it. Of course, channels are full of conflict, as discussed in Chapter 9. Here, the emphasis is on how to diagnose the true sources of conflict and how to direct conflict to use it as a constructive force for change. A fundamental issue underlying almost every attempt to coordinate a channel is how thoroughly a marketplace is covered (how many places a customer could buy a product or service). The intensity of distribution is related to vertical restraints (such as tying contracts and resale price maintenance) and to how many brands a channel member carries (the degree of exclusivity in dealing). These topics are the subject of Chapter 10. Power, conflict, and intensity of distribution all turn on how to influence channel members. The ultimate form of influence is to forge a strategic alliance in a channel, covered in Chapter 11. Because efforts to coordinate often run afoul of the law, the legal environment (Chapter 12) closes this part.

Part Four, "Channel Institutions," describes and evaluates the predominant institutional forms at each level of a marketing channel. The retailing level has a great variety of form: The major issues and challenges confronting them are discussed in Chapter 13. This chapter focuses on physical stores, which customers visit. Chapter 14 covers the rapidly growing nonstore alternatives, including electronic channels, catalogs, and direct selling. Further up in the value-added chain is the wholesaling sector, the subject of Chapter 15. A critical element of value added in marketing channels is logistics and sup-, ply chain management, the topic of Chapter 16. Finally, Chapter 17 deals with the fascinating, complex, and inherently contradictory channel institution of franchising, discussing how, when, and why franchising works.

The sixth edition differs from the fifth edition in its organization of material, but not in its philosophical underpinning. The framework for analysis is presented first, followed by institutionally oriented chapters, rather than the reverse, as in the fifth edition. The framework is also expanded over more chapters, each of which can be the focus of a single course session. The book is significantly internationalized throughout, reflecting the importance of channel management issues throughout the world. This edition also provides extensive coverage of the impact of electronic commerce on channel design and management, both in examples in each chapter and in the separate treatment of the issue in Chapter 14.

Great update for a seminal book (REVIEW UPDATE: March 23, 2006)

Marketing Channels is a must-own for any executive who thinks strategically about the way in which customers buy their company's products.

Like the sixth edition, the seventh edition is organized around a comprehensive framework for channel strategy. Each chapter walks through a different element of the framework. This approach integrates a wide range of material while making it easy to sample just the strategic topics that are relevant to your business.

The seventh edition continues the evolution of the book toward an approach well-grounded in the real-world economics of channels. Much of the content has been carried over from the sixth edition, although the book's structure is more streamlined. A lot of superfluous and outdated material from earlier editions has finally been cleaned up.

The chapter on vertical integration has been rightly moved into the "Channel Implementation" section. This is an outstanding chapter that provides a truly unique synthesis of marketing strategy and economic reasoning.

I have only two minor quibbles. One, the book is beginning to lag behind actual management practice. For instance, the discussion of margin vs. fee payments, new to the seventh edition, receives a scant four paragraphs. Two, the chapters on channel institutions (Retailing, Wholesaling, and Logistics) should either be expanded or more closely integrated with examples in the text. In addition, the data presented in these chapters are often out-of-date, in some cases by more than ten years.

As both a channel strategy consultant and one of Erin's former students, I can personally vouch for the validity of their insights into channel strategy. You will not be disappointed by the quality and rigor of thinking in this book.

Comprehensive book for channel explanations

This book is very well structured with a good logic flow, examples and explanation of channel from design to conflict to power etc. Anyone who is interested in learning channels, distribution, retail, should get a copy of this book. The language is a bit dry, though it is expected for a text book, it is a little harder for me to digest the material because of the writing therefore four stars instead of five. However, a comprehensive book overall!

every CEO should read this book

This edition is really a significant leap forward with so many great examples bringing the framework and principles to life. All the other changes help to broaden the readership appeal and increase the book's usability.

For me, this is the definitive text in the emerging discipline of routes to market and is of tremendous value to channels managers, marketing managers and anyone responsible for their organisation's routes to market.

In fact, never mind the marketeers, every CEO should be required to read it.

Glow LOCKED UP
I’m having these crazy dreams in jail. The dreams are so vivid—so wildly creative—that I know God is in charge of my imagination. I couldn’t dream up this shit without God. God has to be the author of my dreams. In one dream, I’m with Miles Davis. We’re dressed like African princes. Our robes are blue and gold. Miles is singing and I’m playing trumpet. Black angels are surrounding us. We’re bathed in sunlight. We’re on top of the Empire State Building and everyone in the city of New York can hear us. The people are assembled on the street; they’re hanging out their windows and waving flags from office buildings. Helicopters are flying over us, but our music is so powerful that we drown out all noise. Our music is some symphony that has the angels dancing in the sky.

“Didn’t know you could play jazz so good,” Miles says to me.

“Didn’t know you could sing so funky,” I say to him.

The music is so beautiful I start crying through Miles’s horn.

Someone says, “The hospitals are clearing out. The patients are healed.”

Someone else says, “The churches are clearing. The congregations are in the streets.”

“I told you,” says Miles. “I told you we could do it.”

When I put the trumpet to my lips again, the horn turns into a megaphone. When I start to speak, I hear the voice of my mother.

“My son has the answer,” she says. “Miles gave him the answer. Listen to my son.”

I turn to Miles, who rarely smiles, and see that he is smiling.

When I wake up from this dream, I am smiling.

But I’m still in jail.



This long stay in jail is the first time I’m remembering my dreams. I’m not even sure I had dreams before they put my ass behind bars. My mind was clogged up with cocaine—not just any cocaine, but cocaine strong enough to fuel jet engines. I was a jet engine that got dislodged from the plane of my brain. I crashed to the ground and broke into a million pieces. When the pieces magically came back together, the engine could work again. But the fuel was no longer cocaine. The fuel was something I hadn’t used since I was a little boy. I’d call it natural energy and natural drive. It’s a natural restlessness to see and explore and learn. Couldn’t do any of that exploring when I was ripping and running through the world of intoxicants. Didn’t wanna explore. Just wanted to stay high.

So ain’t this a bitch? My highs are my dreams. My dreams are my escape. And my imagination is my way out of prison. If you break down the word “imagination,” I guess it means manufacturing images. Dreaming is the purest form of that process—so, for as long as I’m locked up, I’m gonna write down my dreams.

I’m also gonna write down my life.

I’ve always wanted to write my own life story. But outside of prison I could never sit down and be quiet. My energy was scattered. I was always going in a dozen different directions at once. But now I got no choice. Got nowhere to go and nothing to do. I’m forced to read. And in reading—especially about the lives of people I relate to—I get excited. I read about Charlie Parker, Nat King Cole, Bob Marley, and Malcolm X, and I understand exactly why their lives went the way they did. I see their fuckups as my fuckups; I see their talents as my talents. Sometimes talent is so big it takes you to places that you don’t understand. Super talent doesn’t take you to the Land of Peace; it takes you to Crazyland. And if you ain’t emotionally grounded in something rock-solid, you gonna get annihilated.

I got annihilated. Now I’m getting healed. And part of the healing is dreaming, remembering, and writing.

I can write in peace because I don’t have access to my lethal vices. Being a celebrity in jail also means I have protectors who keep the bad cats away from me. They see I’m serious about writing and form a shield around me.

In prison, I’ve gravitated toward the bookish brothas. I’ve met Muslims who have taken me deep into the Koran. I love and respect Islam. I was raised Catholic but never really studied the Bible till late in life. The Christian brothas in prison have given me a new way to look at the Word. A Jewish man has been talking about Kabbalah, mysticism with wisdom of its own.

Don’t worry. I ain’t gonna shove no religion down your throat. I’m not using this book to win converts. I’m just using the book to manufacture images from my past. I just wanna look at old pictures, lay ’em out there, and, like a jigsaw puzzle, see if I can make the pieces fit. See if I can make sense of a life of nonsense and understand how I got to be caged up like an animal.

I am an animal, a fuckin’ wild animal. I lost my human soul. I lost my human mind. But in this animal cage, my intention is to win back my humanity. Animals can’t write.

I can.

I will.

Not a bad book, but I thought this was another Rick ...

Not a bad book, but I thought this was another Rick James autobiography. I thought that he covered everything in The Confessions of Rick James: Memoirs of a Super Freak and there was no way he had wrote another before his passing and this was the case. This book is simply an edited version of Memoirs of a Super Freak. If you read the other years ago, there is no need to read this one. Great book written in Rick's words, but it's more tame and doesn't go into every little detail. There was no need for me to finish reading this book, because I read the other. You can't go wrong with either one of them though.

Upon further review, I give the book a 3 out of 5. The book is good, but the problem I have with it is that i compared this with my copy of Memoirs of a Super Freak and David Ritz destroyed a good book. Memoirs was raw and pulled no punches. This book seems to tone it down as if Ritz did not want to hurt anyone's feelings. In the original book, Rick James really let Prince have it. He even uses the "f word" that refers to gays when he talks about why Eddie Murphy didn't want prince to produce his next album. The sequence of events with Anita Baker is missing and details as small as the song he said he sang in prison to the racist guards is edited. Ritz turned a rated r book into a pg-13 book. Glow is still a great read, but having so many of Rick's words deleted was not good.

The Unforgettable Rick James

Rick James was the king of Punk Funk, a musical innovator and free thinking individual who lived a life of unbridled excess which killed him when he was only 56 years old in August of 2004. An egomaniacal narcissist, he had a real way with words and a great sense of humor. His life was like his music--original and like no one else. He talks about his many run-ins with the law and stints in prison for various offenses, including draft-dodging, and when he was later caught and arrested, escaping jail and being caught again, meaning more jail time. He was convinced that the rules didn't apply to him, and many times they actually didn't. Although he had obvious intelligence, Rick was his own worst enemy in a way similar to Marvin Gaye--he was a rebel and a know-it-all who couldn't be controlled or told what to do. Rick lived the life of an over-the-top rock star long before he actually was one and it's all here. The drug binges. The orgies. Celebrity romances with the likes of Linda Blair, Catherine Bach (Daisy Duke of The Dukes of Hazzard fame), and Teena Marie are covered, as well as his friendships with luminaries like Neil Young and Marvin Gaye (whose ex-wife Rick also romanced). But Rick's life of excess eventually caught up with him, confusing and tormenting his spirit, destroying his relationships and eventually landing him in prison--again. When Rick's addictions to sex, drugs, and rock n' roll began to take their toll, Rick turned to religion. He became a born-again Christian and describes the experience beautifully. But it didn't last and he was soon back to freebasing cocaine. He flirted with Islam as well, but Rick's addictions and his outsized ego never really left him (he has conversations, throughout the book with a character called Brother Guru who calls Rick's ego the Me Monster). Despite his problems, though, Rick had a larger-than-life view of himself and his place in the musical lexicon. One of the most humorous aspects of the book is Rick's over-the-top hatred of music icon Prince, who he was convinced stole his whole persona. Their alleged altercations, as recounted by Rick, are the funniest things I found in the book. Beyond that, the story of Rick James is a tragedy. A man with so much talent, intelligence, and potential willingly entertained his demons until they swallowed him whole, leaving him in poor health and, ultimately, gone before his time.

Rick James Wrote Great Songs Not Surprisingly He Also Wrote a Great Autobiography

"Glow: The Autobiography of Rick James" is a ride like no other. I will just start off by letting potential readers know that if you're put off by cursing, frank discussions of sex and, this should be no surprise, a lot of descriptive unashamed drug use this book will not be for you. It is safe to say that James holds nothing back in this book since he mentions on a number of occasions that the songs he wrote were primarily autobiographical.

I don't know if James kept some type of journal but how he remembered all these stories from his past with the amount of drugs he claims to have ingested during his career is amazing. Co-Author, David Ritz, does mention in his introduction that James started writing this book during his two year stay in prison. There is another inmate that James calls Brother Guru who has conversations throughout the book with James. He helps James think through some of the decisions and thoughts that James made during his life. At first I took it as it was truly another inmate but the more I read about it I was wondering if Brother Guru wasn't just another side of James trying to make heads and tails of the decisions he made during his life.

I appreciated that James was honest about his feelings about other artists such as Prince, The Doors and many more. He does not always speak flattering about the artists or their talent but too many musicians' autobiographies turn into "lovefests" when they discuss other artists. He gives respect to the artists who helped him get a foot hold in the business.

My only complaint, besides numerous editing errors in the Kindle edition, would be that the timeline seems to be nonexistent. James hops around at the beginning with his stories and the timeline of events seems very confusing. As much as this adds to confusion it does not take away from any of the stories.

I would recommend this book to any music fan that especially like the Punk Funk era that James ruled. This book is a really quick read because the stories are so interesting that it becomes a page turner. A great end of summer weekend read.
