In the dark hours before dawn, a giant war fleet was sailing across the English Channel to France. There were over 5,000 ships and boats of all shapes and sizes. More than 155,000 soldiers were on board—mostly American, British, and Canadian. They were called the Allies. Allies means friends joined together in a cause.

Another huge Allied force had just flown over the channel to France, filling 11,000 airplanes. All of these soldiers, on boats and in planes, were risking their lives to invade Europe and end World War II.

The Second World War had been raging for five years. It had started in 1939 when Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi (NAHT-see) Germany, invaded Poland. Now more than thirty nations were part of the war. The Germans had overtaken nearly all of mainland Europe. And World War II had become the bloodiest war that ever was.

Students love this nonfiction series for AR with book levels from 4.5-6.0 and worth 1 point.

My students are in a 5th and 6th grade gifted class and all really enjoy the entire series of "Who Was?" "Who Is?" and "What Was?" books for their AR (Accelerated Reader) goals. These series are all classified as nonfiction, with book level from 4.5-6.0 and they are worth 1 point.

I was glad to find this book because none of my students were even alive for 9/11, and their knowledge of anything beyond 2000 is almost nonexistent. World War II is fascinating and the event that truly united the country and propelled our economy to be what it was today. Oh, and we defeated the Nazis as a bonus.

Highly recommend.

I strongly believe that our children need to know our history and this type of book and especially this book is an excellent way to begin. It is understandable and easy to read - or be read to. Reluctant readers might not moan and groan if assigned this book to read and I think they might get 'hooked' on the subject. I hope so. I like this book. I learned from it and I definitely would want this type of book in a school collection.

What Was D-Day

I chose to read this book to my children on our way to Normandy France on the 71st anniversary of D-Day. My intent was to give my children (ranging from ages 5-11) a clear and yet "PG" rated picture of just what happened 71 years ago on this day. This book gives enough detail starting with background information of what led the United States to join the fight of WWII and ends with the specifics of what happened on D-Day, focusing mostly on Omaha Beach. The book ends with a few details of how the war ended complete with a photo montage of soldiers, paratroopers, and other scenes from WWII.

A VERY SPECIAL BOOK

Every so often you run across a book, either an "adult" book or a children's book which, after reading the first couple of pages, you come to the realization that you have come across something different, something quite special! Archibald's Swiss Cheese Mountain by Sylvia Lieberman and illustrated by Jeremy Wendell is one of those special books! I cannot remember when I have been so delighted with an original work such as this one! There is something quite special about this story, and the so very many lessons to learn from reading it.

Archibald is a young mouse who lives with is family in Mr. Hochmeyer's General Store. Archibald is a young mouse and is learning about life; is wanting to spread his wings, so to speak, and is filled with the want, wonder, need and hunger for adventure that most young people (a mouse in this case) are naturally filled with at that age. Archibald is lucky, he has a mother that is filled with wisdom and does not mind sharing it. "Measure with your whiskers," Momma Mouse repeated. They are the width of your body. If your whiskers fit, so will the rest of you, my son," and "things within such an easy reach aren't always most desirable," are but two examples.

This entire story is based on Archibald's adventures in Mr. Hochmeyer's store. It is a story of adventure, discovery of his physical surroundings and indeed, discovery of himself as a mouse. Our little furry friend is, for the most part, driven by a preoccupation for food...what youngster isn't driven by this? Or is this just an excuse to do what comes naturally for the young and young at heart, exploration of their physical limitations and to experience life on their own and to its fullest? I have my own suspicions, but each reader can make their own mind up about this. Anyway, throughout his adventures, momma's wisdom and advice is always with him.

This story hit rather close to home for me. My mother was much like Archibald's mother in that she was full of wisdom and good advice. And like Archibald's mother, she was wise enough to know that I had to experience life on my own, to have my own adventures and that you can give a child all the advice you want, but the child is going to test their limits anyway. "Smother the boy and spoil the man," was one of my mother's little sayings. I could relate to this little mouse as he and I had and have many of the same characteristics. The author has wonderful insight into a child's mind!

The story is very well written and Mrs. Lieberman has used a lyrical style that is absolutely captivating. The story flows in a way that makes the entire work a true page turner. Hidden within the prose is all kinds of good advice, some quite obvious, some not, but nevertheless, all sound and all good. Over and over again the author stresses that that there will be obstacles in life, indeed fears of the unknown, but that these little bumps can be overcome. The story is about hunger, not only physical hunger, but intellectual hunger, and is told at a level that children will fully understand. The author seems to have the ability to put these points across in a very enjoyable and fascinating manner.

The art work in this books is great and in many ways rather unique. The artist, Jeremy has used what I call a slap-dash method of mellow but bright colors and has paid very close attention to detail. A cookie is filled with chocolate chips, a Swiss cheese is filled with holes, a can of beans is labeled a can of beans. Facial expressions on our hero and the other mice, people and critters (a large orange cat with green eyes) fit the situation perfectly. The art work goes perfectly with the well written text. The illustrator has captured the spirit of the story perfectly.

This is a perfect read-a-long book. The story is great, the text is quite readable and the pictures quite eye catching. As with most children's books I review, I gave this one a "kid test." It was read to two second grade classes and one first grade class. The book was an absolute hit and I was asked for second readings, and indeed, in one class, a third!

The book is will constructed and should be able to survive the handling of many little hands. The paper is of excellent quality and the print style is very easy on the eyes. The size of the book makes it perfect for group readings, or if one on one, fits perfectly in your lap along with the kid. The reading level on this work is designated at between ages 4 and 8, which I feel is about right.

Recommend this one highly. Do your child a favor and get this one for her or him. Do your self a favor and read it along with the child!

Hurrah for Archibald

Archibald - the next greatest thing

Archibald is adorable! Kids will love him in this, his first adventure. He's young, sweet, innocent and curious about the world around him - just like you! This is a book that kids will want to read, and have read to them, over and over. The illustrations are especially sweet, really conveying the cuteness of this mouse. Whoever this illustrator is will go far! My kids and I loved everything about this book. Highly recommended.

WHAT THIS BOOK IS FOR

Students have generally found differential equations a difficult subject to understand and learn. Despite the publication of hundreds of textbooks in this field, each one intended to provide an improvement over previous textbooks, students of differential equations continue to remain perplexed as a result of numerous subject areas that must be remembered and correlated when solving problems. Various interpretations of differential equations terms also contribute to the difficulties of mastering the subject.

In a study of differential equations, REA found the following basic reasons underlying the inherent difficulties of differential equations:

No systematic rules of analysis were ever developed to follow in a step-by-step manner to solve typically encountered problems. This results from numerous different conditions and principles involved in a problem that leads to many possible different solution methods. To prescribe a set of rules for each of the possible variations would involve an enormous number of additional steps, making this task more burdensome than solving the problem directly due to the expectation of much trial and error.

Current textbooks normally explain a given principle in a few pages written by a differential equations professional who has insight into the subject matter not shared by others. These explanations are often written in an abstract manner that causes confusion as to the principle's use and application. Explanations then are often not sufficiently detailed or extensive enough to make the reader aware of the wide range of applications and different aspects of the principle being studied. The numerous possible variations of principles and their applications are usually not discussed, and it is left to the reader to discover this while doing exercises. Accordingly, the average student is expected to rediscover that which has long been established and practiced, but not always published or adequately explained.

The examples typically following the explanation of a topic are too few in number and too simple to enable the student to obtain a thorough grasp of the involved principles. The explanations do not provide sufficient basis to solve problems that may be assigned for homework or given on examinations.

Poorly solved examples such as these can be presented in abbreviated form which leaves out much explanatory material between steps, and as a result requires the reader to figure out the missing information. This leaves the reader with an impression that the problems and even the subject are hard to learn - completely the opposite of what an example is supposed to do.

Poor examples are often worded in a confusing or obscure way. They might not state the nature of the problem or they present a solution, which appears to have no direct relation to the problem. These problems usually offer an overly general discussion - never revealing how or what is to be solved.

Many examples do not include accompanying diagrams or graphs, denying the reader the exposure necessary for drawing good diagrams and graphs. Such practice only strengthens understanding by simplifying and organizing differential equations processes.

Students can learn the subject only by doing the exercises themselves and reviewing them in class, obtaining experience in applying the principles with their different ramifications.

In doing the exercises by themselves, students find that they are required to devote considerable more time to differential equations than to other subjects, because they are uncertain with regard to the selection and application of the theorems and principles involved. It is also often necessary for students to discover those "tricks" not revealed in their texts (or review books) that make it possible to solve problems easily. Students must usually resort to methods of trial and error to discover these "tricks," therefore finding out that they may sometimes spend several hours to solve a single problem.

When reviewing the exercises in classrooms, instructors usually request students to take turns in writing solutions on the boards and explaining them to the class. Students often find it difficult to explain in a manner that holds the interest of the class, and enables the remaining students to follow the material written on the boards. The remaining students in the class are thus too occupied with copying the material off the boards to follow the professor's explanations.

This book is intended to aid students in differential equations overcome the difficulties described by supplying detailed illustrations of the solution methods that are usually not apparent to students. Solution methods are illustrated by problems that have been selected from those most often assigned for class work and given on examinations. The problems are arranged in order of complexity to enable students to learn and understand a particular topic by reviewing the problems in sequence. The problems are illustrated with detailed, step-by-step explanations, to save the students large amounts of time that is often needed to fill in the gaps that are usually found between steps of illustrations in textbooks or review/outline books.

The staff of REA considers differential equations a subject that is best learned by allowing students to view the methods of analysis and solution techniques. This learning approach is similar to that practiced in various scientific laboratories, particularly in the medical fields.

In using this book, students may review and study the illustrated problems at their own pace; students are not limited to the time such problems receive in the classroom.

When students want to look up a particular type of problem and solution, they can readily locate it in the book by referring to the index that has been extensively prepared. It is also possible to locate a particular type of problem by glancing at just the material within the boxed portions. Each problem is numbered and surrounded by a heavy black border for speedy identification.

I doubt that there's a better supplemental DE book out there

I used this book for an introductory differential equations course. With the help of this book, I was completely prepared for everything the professor threw at us and more.

Some of the problems are simple and should help to reinforce the basic concepts learned from another book. Learn the fundamentals from some other book (or even a professor), and refine your thought processes using this one. There are some basic explanations of concepts and problem types, but most of the space is devoted to problems and solutions, as you may have guessed. If I had trouble with a problem from another book, I could almost always find a similar one in the REA book. A few problems are extremely difficult or involved, but the book leads you through every step of every problem. I was blown away by the depth of a few problems, but following the reasoning in this book really helped me to develop a better "feel" for the subject.

Yes, the font looks like something from your mother's typewriter, but the book is very sensibly organized into a (huge) number of chapters that should more than cover any intro-level DE course. My test reviews consisted of working problems from this book and doing little else, and I've never felt more confident going into exams.

If you're willing to put in the time, this book is probably one of the best course-related resources you could ever spend your money on. It would also be a good reference for someone who occasionally wants help with troublesome problem types.

This is an excellent supplement to any Differential Equations class. It starts out with easy and straight forward problems and progressively gets to the more advanced problems. All steps are worked out in an easy to understand way. Most importantly this book shows the algebraic steps in obtaining solutions, which is ussually where students have trouble. This book is a must have for any science major.

If you are studying DEs, get this book! It beats the usual text books that only contain solutions to selected problems, namely the ones that the professor does not assign or examine you on. This book is comprehensive and contains stratagies for attacking the various problems you will encounter in undergraduate DE courses. It even contains problems and solutions to Partial Differential Equations, Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems, not just ODEs!

Great book, Great extortion from the publication companies

I'm always hesitant to rent because I don't trust myself or shipping services to get it back properly and on time. That being said, Bruce Ballenger is a genius. The book is incredibly helpful in creating not just a research paper but a crafted masterpiece of writing. The reason this gets two stars is because of price! This is a relatively short book and it costs 60 bucks new! for $40 more I could buy all 7 Harry Potter books new! That's several THOUSAND more pages (3407 to be approximate) and MUCH more entertainment! This book costs 60% of the series and contains 384 pages! That's 60% as expensive for not even 10% of the page count!!!!!

I will most likely leave it to collect dust on my desk and open it about 2 times during the semester. Also ordered new but it arrived very banged up anyway, keep that in mind if you order.

Will change your life for the better

Rachel provides easy to follow guiding concepts of ways to improve your morning routine. My personal story - I always told myself the night before, "Tomorrow will be the day that I wake up early and accomplish everything I want to accomplish!" Then comes 6am and I tell myself, just 20 minutes more, just 10 minutes more and I snooze myself all the way until I have to rush to get out the door.

I read the reviews and figured, it's 99 cents, I spend more money on things that are useless so why not take a bet on something that can actually improve my life. And I have to say, this book really did change me for the better. I think what's great about it is that there are not strict guidelines which make you feel guilty for not doing something a certain way. Over the past week, I only had one morning where I snoozed the alarm and what was funny was that I actually DREAMT of my morning routine, which just shows me how much my body does want to get up early and accomplish more.

Get this book if you want to build a morning routine - the book is easy to read (you can do it in one sitting) and the writing is personable and conversational. And it's only 99 cents - you probably lose more change in your couch.

Unlike most books in this niche, this one didn't focus a lot on the theoretical and jumped straight into a bunch of actionable stuff. Because of this the method of creating a morning routine can be instantly used right after reading, all you need to do is make a list of the techniques you want to try and start using them. I finished the book one day and used the techniques the next morning, I swear my day was better because of it!

More of a survey than a real textbook

If you start from scratch and you want to learn designing medical instrumentation, this book will leave you wanting for much more, especially if you wish to design the electronics too. On the whole, this book can be considered a collection of monographies of dishomogeneous complexity and detail level.

For instance, the section on electronics (a measly thirty pages or so) is desperately basic and useless to conjure up any serious application. If you can design a half-decent biopotential amplifier, you don't need to read it, and if you are a medical practitioner wanting to understand more about the innards of your equipement you will find it too technical, because it looks like a copy/paste from an electronics student manual. So why bother inserting it in the first place?

The remaining sections actually do better, are more or less informative and will give you a fairly good overview of the toys of the trade. The section on biopotential and electrodes I found useful and interesting, but on the whole this book is very far from being a standalone solution, or even a reference text. Some parts will never be of interest for you, whatever your field is, and other ones require a lot of further reading.

I don't quite understand whom was it written for: it is too technical for the layman, too uneven and scattered for the student and too generic for the specialist. And the price doesn't help.
