Fascinating look at the early Christian writings and history

Elaine Pagels is an exceptionally engaging writer with a talent for locating and explaining hidden wisdom. She wrote an earlier book, "The Gnostic Gospels: A New Account of the Origins of Christianity," that brilliantly summarized the ancient and rambling Nag Hammadi texts, which describe the teachings of Jesus as captured by early Christian writers. In "Beyond Belief," a title that addresses the audience she wishes to reach, Pagels examines more closely these ancient texts and how they compare to the four gospels. She focus on the "Gospel of Thomas" (90 ce) comparing it to the Gospel of John (100 ce) and current christian beliefs about the teachings of Jesus.
"Beyond Belief" is intensely interesting to the right audience. It is part gospel analysis, which she translates from ancient Greek, part early Christian history and part personal story meant to provide context in understanding the beauty of modern Christianity. One audience for this book is those seeking to understand factually what Jesus taught and what happened to Christianity in the early centuries following his death (30 ce) and how the Gospel of Thomas can shed light on that understanding.
But another audience, the one for whom this book will resonate most deeply, are readers with an intuitive grasp of "transcendence" and the teachings of Jesus that verify the union that can be experienced between God and man. This is what Saint John of the Cross referred to when he wrote "All and Nothing." ("Here I stand alone transcending all knowledge"). Pagels points out that this experience is taught by Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas and expressed in the Vedic literature of India. ("I am That"). It is found in the writings from many religious traditions. One Catholic University scholar has compared the description of the higher states of consciousness from the Upanishads to the rooms described by Saint Theresa of Avila in her "Interior Castle"(Seven states of consciousness; seven rooms in the castle).
There is no doubt that saints the world over have written of union with God. The Christian tradition is no exception (read Alan Watts, "The Supreme Identity."): "It seemed to me, as if [my soul] was wholly and altogether passed into its God, to make but one and the same thing with Him; even as a little drop of water, cast into the sea, receives the qualities of the sea. Oh, union of unity, demanded of God by Jesus Christ for men and merited by him!" -Jeanne-Marie Bouvier de la Motte-Guyon. Or "Blessedness consists primarily in the fact that the soul sees God in herself. Only in God's knowledge does she become wholly still. Therefore it is in Oneness that God is found and they who would find God must themselves become One." And the famous "My eye and God's eye are one eye, one seeing, one knowing, one love." -Meister Eckhart.
I wonder sometimes how we got from these sublime expressions to the crap that is dispensed by our Churches. Nobody explains this better than Pagels. She attempts to explain why, if the experience of union with God is universal, it is not prominently recognized in the four gospels and most Christian teaching.
The problem, Pagels explains as she accounts for the development of early church othodoxy, is that the apostles and the early Christian writers built Church teaching upon revelation and visions. "Without visions and revelations, the Christian movement would not have begun. But who can tell the holy spirit when to stop?..."And when so many people--some of them rivals and even antagonists--all claim to to be divinely inspired, who knows who has the spirit and who does not? She claims that Irenaeus, the promoter of the four gospels, and only those four, was confronted not by "a lack of spiritual revelation but an overwhelming surplus. 'How' he asked 'can we tell the difference between the word of God and mere human words?'" It is in this climate the first attempt to unify Christian believers began.
Hericlitus, the great Greek philosopher, said "All is One." If you recognize the wisdom of this ancient expression and you understand that, consciousness, the source of thought, is divine and that the inner experience of Jesus is available to all, you will enjoy this book. Jesus says in Thomas "I am all: From me all came forth, and to me all attained. Split a piece of wood; I am there. Lift up the stone, and you will find me there.". Or in the words of the Vedas "I am That, Thou art That, All this is That."
Understanding the Transcendent may be the key to appreciating this book. I had been practicing meditation for only about seven years when I discovered Pagels' first book over twenty years ago. The Gospel of Thomas and these gnostic writings from the earliest christians resonated immediately for I could validate it by my experience. Pagels quotes the gospel of Mary Magdalene, "The Son of Man is within you."
In the end, the orthodox view, the Church view, prevailed and the Gnostic writings were suppressed. Perhaps for this reason Hericlitus had another saying for which he was known: "People who follow religions are like cattle."

Sort of about the Gospel of Thomas

A pretty good, but light and unfocused introduction to the Gospel of Thomas (which hardly achieves the right to the book's subtitle). Pagels never seems to commit to her declared topic, and comes off "too unbiased" in my opinion. Her research contributes to gnostic studies in almost revolutionary ways, but she never seems to realize the magnitude of her subject matter, and takes an irritatingly bland middle-ground throughout. Is she a modern gnostic or not?
I liked Pagel's earlier book on "The Gnostic Gospels" better, and was expecting a more detailed, in-depth discussion of the Thomas gospel in this brief tome. For the lay-reader and simply curious, this is a decent starting point. If you're looking for more details about gnosticism, she has contemporary recommendations of more recent publications in her bibliography. Personally, I'd highly recommend the following: "Gnosis", by Kurt Rudolph; "The Gnostic Religion," by Hans Jonas, & the older, more obscure "Fragments of a Faith Forgotten," by GRS Mead. And, of course, the actual Nag Hammadi Library printed & edited by James Robinson is "the source" (along with the syntopic Bible).
As for "Beyond Belief", I have to agree with the reviewer responding to "Peculiar Reviewers" in that there are a handful of seemingly offended people out there who just don't get it when it comes to what gnosticism represents. It's very much alive and growing world-wide, and many would argue that it's never really disappeared, only taken on new forms. Pagels illustrates more specifically where and how Catholicism as we know it today came to be, and on what foundations (by ignoring discrepencies between many so-called "gnostic" texts in favor of the gospel of John, Matthew, Mark and Luke). She focuses more on John and its similarities and differences with the discarded Thomas gospel, which didn't jibe with the political direction the early church fathers such as Irenaeus were pushing so hard for.
"Beyond Belief" seems to really be a blend of biblical history, and Pagel's personal philosophy of "practicing" faith instead of simply "believing"; or reading about it. Jesus would be proud.

About the Author
Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clifton (now New London), Prince Edward Island, in 1874. Her first novel, "Anne of Green Gables" (1908), was followed by more than twenty others. Long after her death, in 1942, she remains one of Canada's most beloved writers.

Kate Chopin was born in St. Louis, Missouri, In 1851. She began writing shortly after herHusband's death and, from 1889 until her ownDeath, her stories and other miscellaneousWritings appeared in Vogue, Youth's companion, Atlantic Monthly, Century, Saturday EveningPost, and other publications. In addition to The Awakening, Mrs. Chopin published another novel, At Fault, and two collections of short stories and sketches, Bayou Folk and A Night at Acadie. The publication of The Awakening in 1899 occasioned shocked and angry response from reviewers all over the country. The book was taken off the shelves of the St. Louis mercantile library and its author was barred from the fine arts club. Kate Chopin died in 1904.

A light, enjoyable read for fans of love stories of the Victorian era

Missed Chances is a collection of five short stories that all feature themes of love and loss. The book was edited by M.R. Nelson and the authors include L.M. Montgomery, Kate Chopin, Rabindranath Tagore, Helen Hunt Jackson and Constance Fenimore Woolson. What is unique about this book is that although all of the writers lived in the 1800s, their stories are still relevant and have stood the test of time. They are heartwarming, melancholic, with just enough humor to keep it lighthearted (Aunt Philippa, I’m looking at you).

Speaking of Aunt Philippa, she is by far my favorite character in the book. She’s a man-hating woman and an absolute riot to read. Her simple explanation of “that’s the men for you” for every undesirable situation that arises with the opposite sex is funny to say the least. I don’t want to give too much away but there’s a cute twist at the end that I rather enjoyed. Bonus: the story takes place in PEI, which isn’t too far from my corner of the world.

The stand out story for me is The Victory by Rabindranath Tagore. As silly as it may sound, it reminds me of a rap battle gone wrong between two poets (read it – you’ll know what I mean) which obviously wasn’t how the author intended it when he wrote it back in the 19th century but for some reason that’s how I imagine the scene would go down if it happened in today’s day and age. Rap battle aside, Shekhar’s decision at the end reminds us that it’s important to never give up as we don’t know what the future holds. Sure, the ending is sad but then who doesn’t love a good love tragedy?

I’m really happy that the publishing company, Annorlunda Books, approached me to review this book. I wasn’t familiar with any other the authors and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to discover their work. Some stories I liked better than others, but overall it was a pleasant read. The book may not cater to everyone depending on taste however if you’re a fan of romantic tales from the Victorian era, pick up Missed Chances – you’re sure to enjoy it.

An enjoyable compilation of short stories

This is the first of Annorlunda Books' Taster Flights and consists of 5 stories in the public domain, edited by M.R. Nelson.
It's a very nice compilation of short stories with the common theme of what might have been and, as promised in the introduction, the stories play up one another nicely. The darker, heavier fare is sandwiched between the sunnier, lighter pieces.

"Aunt Philippa and the Men" by L.M. Montgomery opens the collection, and is a quick, engaging, funny read. It was written in first person from the standpoint of a young woman who seems real and relatable. You will love both her and her Aunt Philippa.
"The Kiss" by Kate Chopin is short, cynical, and delightful.
"The Victory" by Rabindranath Tagore employs stylistic elements that I probably did not appreciate as much as others might and I felt it was perhaps a misfit for this collection.
"The Mystery of Wilhelm Ruetter" by Helen Hunt Jackson was the most difficult one to read. The writing would be considered quite cumbersome by modern standards and the phonetic transcription of the characters' broken English with a thick German accent did not help.
"The Florentine Experiment" by Constance Fenimore Woolson was quite enjoyable to read. It will be a treat for the fans of Jane Austen.

Apart from Tagore's story, this collection also offers a nice window into the portrayal of women by North American female writers in the 1800's, some of whom were willing and able to write about real female characters, with agency and a range of thoughts and feelings. Those characters stand strong and appealing today.

This book was a beautiful combination of a number of popular loves stories. I needn't tell you whether or not this book was good...because all of the stories in the book are quite popular (for a reason). I found that the stories complemented each other very well. I'm not really into 18th century love stories, so I can't say that I would for-sure read this book again....but if you're into stories like that, or are wishing to test the waters, pick up Missed Chances.

Pinckney's Treaty, by Samuel Flagg Bemis, describes the diplomatic efforts that led to that treaty between the US and Spain in 1795. The issues underlying this treaty were:

1. Although Spain had provided covert financial aid to the American Revolution, it had not recognized the US as a sovereign, independent nation. Spain's reluctance to recognize the US was driven in large part by a fear that such recognition of a former British colony would put Spain at a disadvantage in controlling its own restless Latin American colonies.

2. The boundary between the US and Spanish West Florida (roughly the coast of the Gulf of Mexico westward from current state of Florida to the current state of Louisiana) was in dispute. The US maintained that the boundary was along the line of 31 degrees north latitude (a short distance north of the current northern border of Florida) while Spain's claims extended as far north as the great lakes.

3. The US claimed the right of navigation of the Mississippi River from its source to its mouth at the Gulf of Mexico. This right had been recognized by France when it controlled Louisiana but had been denied by Spain when it took possession of Louisiana from France and West Florida from Britain at the end of the American Revolution.

Negotiations to resolve these issues extended for over a decade after the end of the American Revolution in 1783. As in most changes in a nation's diplomatic strategy, Spain's eventual willingness to concede the above issues was not driven by a sudden change of heart. Rather, it was forced on Spain by external events, in this case the wars following the French Revolution. In alliance with Britain, Spain declared war on France in 1793. The war went badly for Spain when France invaded in 1794. That same year, Spain negotiated a separate peace with France, antagonizing its previous ally, Britain. Also in 1794, the US negotiated Jay's Treaty with Britain, resolving several boundary and commercial issues that had festered since the Treaty of Peace between then in 1783. (See my review of Professor Bemis' book on this topic.) The terms of Jay's Treaty were probably not known to Spain although the existence of the treaty was. Spain feared that these terms might include a US-British alliance against Spain. Professor Bemis stresses the impact of Spain's probable ignorance of these terms and fear of a possible US-British alliance in agreeing to sign Pinckney's Treaty with the US. (He includes a lengthy note rebutting another historian who makes a case that Spain might well have known the terms of Jay's Treaty. I don't see this as a significant factor in Spain's decision because secret provisions in treaties were common at the time and could have been an unpublished part of Jay's Treaty even if Spain were aware of the public provisions of the Treaty.)

Professor Bemis uses the case of Pinckney's Treaty to make the additional point that the astounding string of diplomatic successes that took the American Colonies from a fragile republic in 1783 to a continental power in less than a century was due more to the distraction of the European powers than to American genius. True, it took a fair amount of genius to seize the opportunities as Washington, Adams, Jefferson and their successors did. However, lacking the opportunities, their genius would not have prevailed.

Sadly, the many books written by Professor Bemis (1891-1973) are largely out of print. They still provide the best and most thorough introduction to early US diplomatic history that I have encountered. Happily, they are still readily available in Amazon's used book market.

I read this book a while ago, but never got a review posted because I'm disorganized. I LOVE this book and the first one, KILL ME. Owens is a talented writer, and the entire package - cover, editing, writing - is perfect. I recommend all of her books for lovers of the supernatural.

I really enjoyed the second book in this series. I am finding myself looking forward to more with each page read. I can't wait for the next book to come out. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to mix things up and be able to get your vampire fix in a new and exciting way. It gives us a glimpse into the author's mind.I also enjoyed the characters and sense of humour mixed in.

Deep and Simple

Void of heavy-handedness and written in a flowing manner that was easy to read

A worthwhile read that truly speaks to simple changes a person can make in their daily life to make a difference in the world and within. Void of heavy-handedness and written in a flowing manner that was easy to read. Also, gave some wonderful exposure to words of wisdom from religions outside of Christianity.

I bought the book because of its title

The book lives up to its title. It served as a reminder about the things in life that truly matter. It has been nice to slow down my busy life, read the book and be present with its message.
