About the Author
Van Hipp is Chairman of American Defense International, Inc. He has been immersed in defense and security matters since 1990 when he was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Reserve Forces and Mobilization. He was named by then-Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney to be the Principal Deputy General Counsel of the Navy. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Hipp served on active duty in both Operation Desert Storm and Operation Restore Democracy. He is a frequent writer and speaker on defense and international policy issues. He and his family reside in the Washington, DC area.

Good read on the truth behind terrorism

I think this is an excellent book on terrorism. Van gives up an in depth look at what is happening in the Isalm world and the truth behind the myths. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in national security of our country. This book is well written and easy read. The timing of this book is right on with what is happening in our world today.

Good info on current events in the world. The book is just one guys opinion but he has some great ideas and insight. Unfortunately American politics will prevent most of the ideas being considered. We wouldn't want to offend anyone in the name of safety for Americans now would we?

This is an extremely informative read that goes to new depths on the topic of radical Islam. Other reviewers have thoroughly conveyed the relevance of this book on that matter, so I will touch on the fact that this book calls for a decreased dependence on oil and the development of the nuclear power industry. Regardless if you believe buying oil from countries that house these terrorist organization actually benefit those groups, oil reserves are finite. The world will eventually run out of oil and the industries that rely on that oil with cease to exist. Because of our society's heavy reliance on oil, America is heavily dependent upon other countries and in the unstable global economy, that is not a good place to be.

Nuclear power is the most "green" energy source that can efficiently produce power. It is greener than solar, wind, and hydroelectric and safer than oil refineries. There is a lot of hesitancy in America to further the nuclear industry after Three Mile Island (which resulted in 0 deaths) because of the way the media portrayed the incident. At that time the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission wasn't performing their duties to the standards that we as a society have come to expect. With that being said, the NRC has made huge steps to regulate the nuclear industry by placing heavy regulations on plants currently operating and even more stringent requirements for plants that are set for construction. Nuclear power is the way of the future and other countries, such as China, have already started making a huge push in that direction.

In summary, this book is a great read because it doesn't just talk about terrorism, it (as the title says) talks about how to fight and defeat it.

Budgeting Basics & Beyond (Third Edition): Overall Disappointment

Jae Shim and Joel Siegel introduce their audience to the budgeting process in both the profit and non-profit sectors. Unfortunately, the authors fail to deliver on the expectations that this book generates for several reasons. First, and most importantly, the third edition of "Budgeting Basics & Beyond" contains a number of mathematical errors or missing numbers. Think for example about the second table of example 1 (p. 254), exhibit 17.5 (p. 263), and exhibit 20.5 (p. 316). Secondly, the book under review also contains errors in the legend of a number of exhibits and typos in text formulas. Think for example about exhibit 1.3 (p. 15), the bottom of schedule 1 (p. 79), and the definition of profit variance analysis for multiple products (pp. 138-139). All these errors confirm ironically what Shim and Siegel quote on p. 264: `Between 78 and 97 per cent of spreadsheets contain "serious material errors" with a potential to devastate the bottom line.' Thirdly, the book contains too many "skeleton" templates with little content or no content that add value to this manual. Think for example about the templates which are reproduced on pp. 205-223 in chapter 13. Fourthly, the third edition of "Budgeting Basics & Beyond" does not make extensive use of Excel screenshots to clarify a number of concepts. Think for example about the income approach to valuation, more specifically the discounted cash flow (DCF) method (pp. 297-302). To summarize, the book under review should be redone and proofread thoroughly before being put on sale anywhere.

What is wrong with people who write textbooks

Honestly....I am starting to think that those who write textbooks really don't care about people attempting to learn their knowledge. This book's author does a horrible job at breaking down the terminology in a book and explaining it to someone who has no concept of budgeting. WOW you can use big words that you understand.....but guess what? Those you are selling your book to have no idea what you are saying. Here is a marketing tip for you....have consumers read it before you publish it. What in the hell is wrong with textbook authors? Honestly, it is a great feat that you have a Masters or PhD, but it is sad to know that those with such high educational levels don't understand the basic concept of making the ability to learn easier. Yes i can spend hours upon hours of looking words up in the dictionary (and i have), but this doesn't make my motivation higher to want to learn. In fact, you stifle students ability to pay attention. Textbook authors suck...except for the VERY VERY few. This book should no be purchased by anyone and should not be pushed on students like some colleges do.

A Great Read!

I liked reading Taken by me Twin Stepbrothers, all about Damian & Angel my stepbrothers and me their step-sister. You see I was adopted when I was thirteen and have always had two amazing stepbrothers that looked after me and really made me feel like one of the family! The author wrote an interesting story, and the characters bring the story to life. I'm back for a weekend visit and they brought me to the lake, now I'm thinking I should see if I can get a month off and stay at the lake with my stepbrothers! If you like taboo stories that are hot & steamy and make you wet, then this series is right for you! I can't wait to read book two.

This is a quick read. (lunch time). There isn't anything I can say bad about it!. Only thing I wish it was a longer read :) The characters are amazing. And I want more of them LOL

About the Author
Santiago Roncagliolo is a Peruvian novelist and investigative journalist. His first novel, Red April, won the Premio Alfaguara in 2006 and the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize in 2011. In 2010 Granta named him one of its 22 Best Young Spanish-Language Novelists. He contributes to El Pa�s and other leading Spanish-language newspapers. Santiago Roncagliolo lives in Barcelona.

Edith Grossman is one of the English-language’s most renowned translators, having translated key works by Nobel laureates Gabriel Garc�a M�rquez and Mario Vargas Llosa. Is this supposed to be a hipster book?

I found though the writing was good technically, and the translation made it sound written in English and not translated like some books I've read in translation, I didn't like this book at all. It could be summed up in a old t-shirt slogan: life's a bitch and then you die. The characters are the type of people I try to make sure that if they invade my life, I get rid of them. There was no insight for me or the characters. The only "resolution" was death for some of the characters. The characters bored me. Publisher's Weekly loved the rifts on the horribleness of Meg Ryan movies. Really? Though I am not a rom com fan, I don't think people who like such movies are stupid. At least there is hope, growth and resolution even if predictable. I prefer to add positive things to my life through reading as reality is often so awful. Luckily most real people aren't as 2D as these characters and do try to get somewhere even if often ineffectively. Unless you love to read about hopeless people getting nowhere, like being cynical about life, don't bother.

Hi, This Is Conchita

A meek and insecure office worker calls a phone sex line and almost immediately thinks he has established a special and permanent relationship with "Conchita." Another man has the all too common experience of calling "customer service" and, after enduring the endless hold music, receives nothing resembling service. A married man who wants to be rid of an overly possessive girlfriend places a call to a strangely reluctant contract killer. And finally a man with obvious mental problems leaves a long and bitter message on his ex-girlfriend's answering machine.

In the title novella of Hi, This Is Conchita and Other Stories, told entirely in phone dialog, these four sub-plots not only develop but begin to interconnect in subtle ways. The result is a poignant but often funny look at modern life where we are always talking but so seldom communicating. The novella is followed by three short stories.

In "Despoiler," set in Barcelona during Carnival, a middle-aged woman finds her childhood obsession with a stuffed animal suddenly revived. In "Butterflies Fastened with Pins," a story very reminiscent of the writing of Bret Easton Ellis, the narrator looks back on his drug-fueled youth which has seen one friend after another commit suicide. And in the macabre finale, "The Passenger Beside You," a young woman sits down next to a man on a bus, shows him the gaping bullet wound where her heart used to be, and tells him what it's like to be dead.

The only complaint I have about this collection of fast-paced, captivating, and unsettling stories is that there isn't more of it.

ONE OF THE MAJOR “THEORETICAL” WORKS BY THE NOTED LINGUIST

Avram Noam Chomsky (b. 1928) is an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, logician, political commentator, and outspoken social activist. He is Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has written many books, such as Language & Thought, Problems of Knowledge and Freedom, Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media, Media Control, etc.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1965 book, “The idea that a language is based on a system of rules determining the interpretation of its infinitely many sentences is by no means novel… Nevertheless, within modern linguistics, it is chiefly within the last few years that fairly substantial attempts have been made to construct explicit generative grammars for particular languages and to explore their consequences… In particular, the central role of grammatical transformations in any empirically questions as to the proper form of the theory of transformational grammar. This monograph is an exploratory study of various problems that have arisen in the course of work on transformational grammar, which is presupposed throughout as a general framework for the discussion. What is at issue here is precisely how the theory should be formulated. This study deals, then, with questions that are at the border of research in transformational grammar.”

In the first chapter, he says, “in the technical sense, linguistic theory is mentalistic, since it is concerned with discovering a mental reality underlying actual behavior. Observed use of language or hypothesized dispositions to respond, habits, and so on, may provide evidence as to the nature of this mental reality, but sure cannot constitute the actual subject matter of linguistics, if this is to be a serious discipline.” (Pg. 4)

He states, “The existence of deep-seated formal universals, in the sense suggested by such examples as these, implies that all languages are cut to the same pattern, but does not imply that there is any point by point correspondence between particular languages. It does not, for example, imply that there must be some reasonable procedure for translating between languages.” (Pg. 30)

He points out, “The child who acquires a language in this way of course knows a great deal more than he has ‘learned.’ His knowledge of the language, as this is determined by his internalized grammar, goes far beyond the presented primary linguistic data and is in no sense an ‘inductive generalization’ from these data.” (Pg. 32-33)

He acknowledges, “it is clear that no present-day theory of language can hope to attain explanatory adequacy beyond very restricted domains. In other words, we are very far from being able to present a system of formal and substantive linguistic universals that will be sufficiently rich and detailed to account for the facts of language learning.” (Pg. 46)

He summarizes, “it seems clear that the present situation with regard to the study of language is essentially as follows. We have a certain amount of evidence about the character of the generative grammars that must be the ‘output’ of an acquisition model for language. This evidence clearly shows that taxonomic views of linguistic structure are inadequate and that knowledge of grammatical structure cannot arise by application of step-by-step inductive operations… of any sort that have yet been developed within linguistics, psychology, or philosophy… It seems plain that language acquisition is based on the child’s discovery of what from a formal point of view is a deep and abstract theory---a generative grammar of his language---many of the concepts and principles of which are only remotely related to experience by long and intricate chains of unconscious quasi-inferential steps…

“It is, for the present, impossible to formulate an assumption about initial, innate structure rich enough to account for the fact that grammatical knowledge is attained on the basis of the evidence available to the learner… In short, the structure of particular languages may very well be largely determined by factors over which the individual has no real conscious control and concerning which society may have little choice or freedom… Thus it may well be that the general features of language structure reflect… the general character of one’s capacity to acquire knowledge---in the traditional sense, one’s innate ideas and innate principles.” (Pg. 57-59)

He states, “It is clear from this fragmentary and inconclusive discussion that the interrelation of semantic and syntactic rules is by no means a settled issue, and that there is quite a range of possibilities that deserve serious exploration… Evidently, further insight into these questions will await a much more intensive study of semantic interpretive rules than it has yet been possible to undertake. The work of the last few years, I believe, has laid the groundwork for empirical investigations of this sort. There is a general theoretical framework parts of which have received empirical support. Within this framework it is possible to formulate certain reasonably clear questions, and it is also fairly clear what kind of empirical evidence would be relevant to deciding them. Alternative positions can be formulated, but for the present any one that is adopted must be extremely tentative.” (Pg. 159)

He concludes, “I shall simply point out that the syntactic and semantic structure of natural languages evidently offers many mysteries, both of fact and of principle, and that any attempt to delimit the boundaries of these domains must certainly be quite tentative.” (Pg. 163) He ends the book with the statement, “the questions we have touched on here have not yet been illuminated in any serious way by approaching them within the framework of any explicit grammatical theory. For the present, one can barely go beyond mere taxonomic arrangement of data. Whether these limitations are intrinsic, or whether a deeper analysis can succeed in unraveling some of these difficulties, remains an open question.” (Pg. 192)

This is a very complex book---and Chomsky has modified some of his ideas since it was written---but one that will be “must reading” for anyone studying linguistic theory.
