My wife loves it. Seriously. She finds some of the descriptions hilarious and actually giggles while reading through it. This wrapped up the gag gifts we did for Christmas this year, she was pleased.

some good stuff. most i already knew

My dad is a lawyer and didn't teach me anything except work hard in school so when you grow up you can pay someone well to do handy work for you.

I like to do my own work and am a mechanical engineer.

This book had some good stuff, but most of it I learned in the boy scouts. The non-handy stuff I learned from my dad.

There was some good handy stuff that I didn't know. But this is a small book and not a serious self-improvement book. This would be a better becoming a man present for a 16 year old or younger boy.

I brought this book home for my husband, but I actually read it first! It was full of humor, as well as tips on how to navigate your way through life. And yes, as a woman, I still felt the need to read this. While it is indeed awesome for a man to tie his own tie, it can be extremely sexy and intimate for the woman in his life to do it for him. And I also might need too know how to carve a turkey or change a flat tire. All in all, it's an entertaining read, full of useful, or at the least, interesting tidbits. The reason I didn't give it a higher rating is that I wanted more.

Poignant and Gripping

Otec was never meant to lead. He's awkward and shy - a throw away soon. He's content to live his summers chasing lambs through the mountains, and hunkering down in the winters with his family, transforming wood into beautiful carved animals. No one sees the details and beauty in the world like he does. No one, except for Matka. The brave and haunted woman the traveling highmen have brought to their borders. Their first encounter trips a series of horrific events that change everything Ortec is and knows. Though the darkness, he'll have to find a light. Can he find it in Matka? This was a gripping tale, full of love and loyalty, bravery and death. There were parts I cried. Though this is technically the first in the series, the books were written out of order. Matka's terror of the fairies makes total sense to me, but it may not make sense to those who haven't read other books in the Fairy Queen series. And if you haven't read them yet, GO READ THEM NOW!!

What a great novella

Otec had a pretty good life. Being the middle child of the Clan Chief, nothing was expected of him. He spent his summers in the mountains with the sheep only returning for the winter. This year was the turning point in his life.

Upon returning to the village, he found all the men had gone to fight the Raiders near the coast. Hundreds of Highmen from Svassheim was camped at the east end of the village. Matka was unlike any woman he had ever met before. She is small yet strong, beautiful and creative. Fearless and vulnerable at the same time.

She convinces Otec to take her up in the mountains to find a particular flower that she needs. After two days climbing the mountain, they wake up to find his village is being raided. They can see the houses burning. Realizing Matka and her people betrayed them, his fury consumes him.

Aching to return home to save his family, Matka convinces him to travel to the next village for help and reinforcements. How can he trust her when she is the enemy?

Otec is thrust into becoming leader of his clan. Unprepared and unwilling, he must lead his men into war to protect the Shyle. He must become a man fast and make hard decisions for the best of the clan.

*I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

I'm a huge fan of Amber's Fairy Queen series - it's dark and gritty, but also full of beautiful world-building, memorable (and sometimes terrifying) characters, and even a few glimpses of hope and light through the horrors of war. I also really love novellas that reveal the background of more minor characters, so I knew I had to read this story as soon as I heard the Amber was writing it.

In this novella, we're given a little bit more insight into Ilyenna's parents before the start of Winter Queen. We get to see how they meet, and how they deal with all kinds of awful circumstances that are out of their control. Otec is a middle child - he's not old enough to go with his brothers and father to meet the coming army, and he definitely will never be clanchief. Except destiny has a different plan for him, and his entire world is flipped upside down when the Shyle is attacked. But even in the midst of trying to save his family and his people, Otec manages to find love.

The romance is definitely a big part of the story, but Amber still somehow manages to weave an exciting story that has so many different facets that the romance doesn't overwhelm the rest of the plot. Matka is dangerous and cunning all on her own, and guards her heart just as much, if not more, as Otec guards his. I loved watching their friendship develop and transform into something more, through perceived betrayals, interfering fairies, and the loss of loved ones.

If you haven't read the rest of the Fairy Queen series, this story will still stand on its own. You don't need to know much else before diving right into this book, and it might be a good place to start. If you have read the Fairy Queen books though, you definitely want to read this novella! There are so many references and connections to things in both Winter Queen and Summer Queen, and it was a lot of fun to be able to recognize those. It makes the entire series stronger and gives the world and the characters so much more depth. If you love fantasy, especially books like the Graceling series, you definitely want to read these books! 5/5.

If you are struggling with marital infidelity, this book will help you heal your relationship

Speaking as a counselor, this is a valuable book. Dr. People’s book is an essential tool for those who have felt the pain of infidelity in their relationship. Written for the couple and the professional therapist, her book attest to the ability for couples to find solutions to their marital infidelity. I highly recommend this book to the couple because it is both clear yet respectful. The text presents a framework for the head to understand the emotional impact of the affair so that the heart can heal from the infidelity. If you are struggling with marital infidelity, this book will help you maintain your relationship- one that you have invested time, life, and love.
For the professional it is a valuable tool to address marital infidelity from a solution focused base. While still having respect for longer term therapeutic methods (Gestalt, Psychodynamic, etc....) that might be employed once the crisis is addressed. Dr. Peoples provides methods that will aid the healing process. Too many times these long -term therapies shoot themselves in the foot by deferring to process rather than employing interventions that are steps for healing and change. Dr. Peoples defines 7 steps that aid couples with nursing the relationship back into a health. In clear and concise language the book suggests methods that the couple can use to heal the wound in their relationship. For those who work with couples, a tool such as this book is a valuable one to manage the pain, energy, and emotion of an extramarital affair. The Infidelity Survival Plan is an easy to read

The Infidelity Survival Plan is an easy to read, well thought out text that explains the dynamics of relationships, beliefs, values, and hurt. Dr. Peoples explains in understandable terminology how we formulate our values and beliefs and the impact these have upon relationships. She normalizes the painful experience of feeling betrayed and allows us a step-by-step guide to healing. As a therapist and clinical supervisor for more than 30 years I have used similar methodology and techniques as Dr. Peoples but have not synthesized them into such a cohesive package as Dr. Peoples has done in this book. When reading it on truly gets the feeling that they’re having a conversation with their therapist. I have already recommended this book to clients in opposite sex and same-sex relationships. This mindful book will assist anyone who has struggled or is struggling with the aspects and undercurrents of infidelity. It is also a must read for any clinician working with couples where feelings of unfaithfulness or disloyalty are issues in treatment. Dr. John D, Massella

Healing after an affair: Conveying hope through practicality.

As a therapist in private practice working with individuals, I find this book to be a practical guide to helping hurt partners deal with the disastrous effects that infidelity can cause. The book is laid out in clear, rational steps to assist in increasing communications to understand and resolve the conflict, manage feelings and work toward breaking the negative cycles that perpetuate the drama and stunt any hope of progress in healing the relationship. The book is structured in seven main steps, each equipped with behavioral strategies with clear directions. This is the way that people learn to change patterns and internalize the change- through behavior. This book really conveys hope! I highly recommend this for clinicians as well as people who have been hurt by infidelity and want to work toward healing.
